The first T20 match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand took place at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl first. This match is part of a three-match T20 series, which will be followed by an ODI series.

The pitch at Bay Oval is known for offering good bounce and seam movement, making it favorable for fast bowlers. Both teams included three pace bowlers in their squads. For New Zealand, Matt Henry returned to the team after being rested during their tour of Sri Lanka. He was joined by Zakary Foulkes and Jacob Duffy. This game was also a special one for Mitchell Hay, Tim Robinson, and Zakary Foulkes, as it marked their first home game.

On the Sri Lankan side, Binura Fernando played his first T20 match since March. He was supported by fast bowlers Matheesha Pathirana and Nuwan Thushara. The team also included two spinners, Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga, making their bowling attack quite strong.

Sri Lanka’s captain, Charith Asalanka, mentioned that the pitch looked good for batting but believed it would be easier to chase runs later. On the other hand, New Zealand’s captain, Mitchell Santner, said he was happy to bat first, though he noted the green pitch might help the bowlers early on.

The weather at Mount Maunganui was perfect for cricket, with a fast outfield and a surface expected to provide an exciting contest.
