Famed US actress in awe of ‘magical’ T&T

The actress, known for her role as Clair Huxtable, a lawyer and mother of five on NBC's The Cosby Show, is currently in T&T for the Carnival season.
During her exploration of the country yesterday, Rashad, a recipient of multiple Emmy and Tony awards, appeared enchanted by T&T. She likened her experience to her time working on Broadway in The Wiz in 1975, alongside the late Trinidadian actor Geoffrey Holder, where Rashad played a munchkin.
“In the early stages of my career, I had the privilege of collaborating with Geoffrey Holder, and now I grasp the essence of what made the original production of The Wiz so extraordinary because he infused Trinidadian elements into it,” she expressed.
Holder, a Trinidadian artist, dancer, and choreographer, earned two Tony awards for his contributions to the musical adaptation of The Wizard of Oz.
“The vibrancy, the rhythm, the enchantment, Trinidad,” she remarked.
Since her arrival, Tourism Trinidad has shared photos of Rashad at the Bamboo Cathedral in Chaguaramas and at Phase II Pan Groove’s panyard, where she met veteran composer and arranger Len “Boogsie” Sharpe.
“Many fail to comprehend the steelpan; people beyond your cultural sphere often overlook its brilliance, its complexity, its musicality, its dedication, its joy; I could scarcely sleep last night,” she revealed.
Rashad noted that she now has a deeper appreciation for the diversity of T&T’s national instrument.
“The vitality, witnessing this diverse group of musicians from various corners of the globe, from different cultural backgrounds, and I believe that's what distinguishes Trinidad, which I truly admire,” she elaborated.
The actress recounted her daughter's observations about the cultural diversity of the country and how inclusivity is embraced during her visit in 2023.
Rashad contemplated, "Here, there's a rich blend of culture, history, and connections, making me wonder how such diverse people coexist so harmoniously in this single place."
And though there are still a few days left until masqueraders grace the streets in their colorful costumes and exuberance, Rashad has already encapsulated her impressions of T&T.
“It serves as a model for global living,” she concluded.
